Solid State Physics and Materials Science
How do the countless electrons found in material behave? What interactions take place; how do the electrons organise themselves within a material and what does this mean for a specific material’s state of matter? Andrei Bernevig not only investigates and calculates how materials behave in classic states of matter but also, for instance, how they become superconducting. To this end, he combines theoretical predictions with experimental proof. He is particularly well-known for his work on topological insulators. These materials only insulate in their interior whilst conducting electricity on their surface. Andrei Bernevig uses unconventional methods to combine the investigation of fundamental aspects of Solid State Physics with issues in Materials Science. With a joint appointment at FU Berlin and the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics in Halle, his broadly-based activities are now expected to connect these research fields.
Bogdan Andrei Bernevig has been selected for the Humboldt Professorship and will now embark on appointment negotiations with Freie Universität Berlin and the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics in Halle that nominated him. If the negotiations succeed, the award will be conferred in May 2019.

Prof. Dr. Bogdan Andrei Bernevig
was born in Romania in 1978 and is a Professor of Physics at Princeton University in the United States. He took his doctorate at Stanford University, USA, and subsequently became a postdoc at the Princeton Center for Theoretical Physics at Princeton University, where he then held various professorships. Bernevig has received numerous prizes for young researchers, including the 2014 Sackler Prize, the 2016 New Horizons Prize and a 2017 Guggenheim Fellowship.
