The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is committed to making its internet offerings as user friendly as possible and strives to continually improve them. Analysing statistical data on the use of our web pages and recording various technical details concerning the browsers and computers visitors to our web pages use helps us to do this. For this reason, every time our website is used and every time a page is accessed, information is temporarily stored and processed in a log file.

Specifically, the following information is recorded for every access/retrieval:

  • abbreviated IP address,
  • date and time,
  • retrieved page/ name of the retrieved file,
  • address of the previously visited website (referrer/search term),
  • name and version of your browser/ operating system/ screen resolution (if this information is available) of your device.

This data is analysed solely for statistical purposes and to improve the website. It is not used in any other way nor is it made available to third parties.

Please note however that when you use integrated external services - such as Google Maps for showing locations or for directions to a particular address, YouTube for videos, Twitter for thematic news feeds - your IP address and possibly other personal data are sent to the respective service provider (Google, etc.) where it may be stored and analysed. We do not assume responsibility for this.

Within the scope of using, Matomo Analytics – an open-source program for web analytics – collects and stores data from which pseudonym user profiles are created by using cookies. Such user profiles are used for the analysis of user behaviour and are evaluated for the improvement and demand-specific design of our service offer.

In this respect, Matomo Analytics uses cookies which are stored to your device and allow an analysis of your use of the website. The information generated by a cookie regarding your use of these websites are transferred to and stored on the own web server of the Humbold Foundation. Matomo Analytics insofar shortens your IP address by the last three digits prior to the transfer via your web browser.

The Humboldt Foundation will use this information to assess your use of the website and also to compile reports on website activities. The IP address transmitted by your browser within the scope of Matomo Analytics will not be combined with other data of the Humboldt Foundation.

You may object to the collection and storage of data for the purpose of web analysis at any time effective for the future by preventing the saving of cookies through a corresponding setting of your browser software. Moreover, you may also prevent the collection of data generated by the cookie and the data related to your use of the website, including your IP address as well as the processing of such data by us, if you download and install the browser plug-in available through the link However, we would like to point out that, in this case, you will possibly not be able to use all the functions of Humboldt Life to their full extent. Alternatively you can set an opt-out-cookie within Matomo so that no data is collected (within the browser you set the cookie with).
